Hearing loss and sexually transmitted diseases

Did you know that some sexually transmitted diseases can cause hearing loss and other ear symptoms?

STDs such as Syphilis, Herpes and Chlamydia can cause hearing loss symptoms.

Though overall patient numbers are still relatively low, syphilis is rising steeply according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hearing loss and tinnitus, or ear-ringing, are among the manifestations of this sexually transmitted disease. When these symptoms occur, it is referred to as Otosyphilis. Symptoms of Otosyphilis includes new hearing loss in one or both ears, tinnitus, and sometimes vertigo — often associated with a rash or sore. Syphilis-induced hearing loss can be successfully treated if caught early, but lack of treatment can allow the condition to progress into total deafness.

Genital Herpes simplex (HSV 2) is known to cause varying degrees of hearing loss, in many cases a moderate degree of permanent (sensorineural) hearing loss, in both ears.

In general, Chlamydia pneumoniae infection is a mild illness that most commonly causes an upper respiratory tract infection. These upper respiratory tract infections can include a sore throat or an ear or sinus infection. Chlamydia pneumoniae may also be a possible cause for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
