BAHA Switch on day

It’s normal to feel nervous and excited as you get ready for the day when you’ll start hearing with your Baha® system.

At your first appointment, your audiologist will fit your sound processor and program it for you.

Here’s a list of questions to ask your hearing health professional to help you know what to expect.

  1. What happens during my appointment?
  2. What will programming my sound processor feel like?
  3. Will I hear right away?
  4. How will it sound? Will it sound just like I remembered, or will it sound mechanical or high-pitched?
  5. How long will it take for me to adjust to the new sound?
  6. How do I put on my sound processor?
  7. How does my sound processor and implant work?
  8. What tips do you have for using my new sound processor?
  9. Can my BAHA processor connect with my phone?
  10. How often will I need to charge or change the batteries?
  11. How do I store and care for my device?
  12. What happens if my hearing changes over time?
  13. Is there a network of hearing implant recipients in our community? Can you put me in touch with them?
  14. How often should I see the hearing health professional for follow-ups and hearing tests?
  15. Remember that insuring your BAHA is optional but important!

What usually happens on fitting day?

Your audiologist will explain how your sound processor works and they’ll fine tune your sound processor settings.

You may start by listening to a series of beeps, followed by the voice of your hearing health professional and any loved ones with you.

Your brain may need time to adjust to your new hearing. Although you might recognize the sounds you’ve been missing, don’t worry if this doesn’t happen straight away.

Your audiologist will explain how  to use your instrument, how to handle it, switch it on, use it and store it.

“When my Baha was just activated, I heard things that I hadn’t heard in years. It was really awe-inspiring. The technology was incredible.”*¹- John, Cochlear™ Baha® recipient

After your sound processor is switched on

There will probably be a series of appointments with your hearing health professional to adjust and further fine tune your sound processor’s programs.

You may find some sounds are louder than others. This is expected, but let your hearing health professional know if you find them uncomfortable.

Follow your sound processor’s guidelines for care and maintenance and don’t hesitate to contact us at Yolande van der Westhuizen Audiologists for assistance where needed
